Stained Glass For Beginners [VHS]In this punnily titled episode, Sister Wendy Beckett describes the panes of stained glass windows of King’s College Chapel, in Cambridge, England. These medieval windows describe the Passion of Christ and therefore his pain (hence the title). Sister Wendy converses within the glorious architecture of the chapel with Reverend Dr. George Pattison, the dean of King’s College. Together they examine and describe each section of these windows depicting the final story of the life of Jesus, from his agony to his betrayal and crucifixion. With tremendous conviction and enthusiasm, Sister Wendy interrupts the dean to emphasize that these windows are indeed works of art rather than just examples of superb craftsmanship. Her insights into this depiction of the last days in the life of Jesus are illuminating and insightful. Happily, the program also includes shots of the famous King’s College Choir singing a selection of old music appropriate to the story. Sister Wendy dressed in her black habit presents quite a contrast to the lime-green jacket, pink shirt, and blue pants of the dean, whose clothing more closely resembles the stained glass. The shots of the stained glass are remarkable given how difficult it is to capture them in the right lighting conditions. –Anne Barclay Morgan
